6th grade

Dear current 6th grade families,

We hope you are all in good health. Despite our students being home, we would like to collect student preferences regarding course selection for the 2020-21 school year. We typically begin this process each March.  Student course preferences are essential for us to determine how many sections of each elective we need to create for next year.

Below are the instructions for inputting your course requests online. You should also watch this short video with great instructions from Counselor Morgan Collins.

It is vitally important that you complete this task during the open window (Wednesday, March 25th through Friday, March 27th). Without your requests, we will not be able to ensure enough spaces in the electives you want. If you have any difficulties completing registration, please email Linda Roberts at or leave a voicemail for her at 360-662-2340.

During these three days, your counselor will be available by email for questions according to the schedule below (feel free to email either counselor). If you get stuck or have questions, please reach out during these times to ensure that we’ll be available to respond in a timely manner. Obviously, you can email your counselor anytime, but during these times they will be dedicated to sitting in front of their computers to answer emails immediately.

You have 2 big decisions to make. The first is whether you’d like to do honors language arts and honors history or regular language arts and regular history. The second, is which electives you’d like to take.

Honors versus Non Honors: Honors Language Arts and History are paired together. If you take Honors LA, you MUST take Honors History and vice versa. You cannot pick honors for one and non honors for the other. There is no prerequisite for honors, any student can opt into the honors classes. Honors classes tend to go deeper into the subject and students are expected to be driven and self-motivated. There is not a huge difference in homework and the classes cover the same subjects.

Electives: Here is the link to our course catalog so you can read through elective options and make informed decisions about what to try:

Can I take a foreign language as a 7th grader?

At this time the district is only allowing 8th graders to take a foreign language class.

Who teaches what class?

Teaching assignments are not completed until June, so there is really no way of knowing at this time.

What is summer PE? How can I sign up?

Summer PE is an online course which requires a good amount of work. It costs families $100. Taking summer PE does waive the requirement of PE, but it does not necessarily guarantee that you’ll get into the elective of your choice. You can read more and sign up by clicking this link:

What math am I being placed in?

Your math assignment has already been determined by your teacher. If for any reason your math teacher is recommending that you not move up to the next math class in the sequence, you would have already been contacted.

I’m a Magnet student, what do I sign up for since there’s no Magnet option?

Magnet students will be automatically placed into Magnet Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies. We don’t give it as an option because we don’t want families to think they can opt in (or out) of magnet using this course request process. You can sign up for either Honors or non-Honors, either way, you’re being placed in Magnet.
