Central Kitsap Middle School Principal's Newsletter featuring the Cub mascot.

WELCOME Back to School!

Belonging - Connections - Cohesion

Greetings CUB Families! I hope you've had the opportunity to enjoy the summer days before they wind down. Our beautiful Puget Sound - Kitsap Peninsula region is one of THE best places to be when the sun is out!

As we roll into the 2026-27 SY, I want to be sure students, families and staff are aligned in our school's culture of BELONGING through dignity, Cub CONNECTIONS and COHESION around student expectations. Our team will be focused on "leveling-up" our instructional and intervention practices "by design." This means we'll be collaborating to analyze student growth data for purposeful planning in order to engage each learner, every day, in every classroom.

Together, we can build on the progress we’ve made and ensure our school is a place where every student feels safe, seen, included and supported. We are SO VERY grateful for the partnership. #CUBpride, #Level-Up, #BestTeamEver

Warmest regards,
Thomasina Rogers - Principal

Mobile Device Policy

Please have a conversation with your child about our school-wide mobile device policy.
  • Mobile phones/devices are to be "off/silent/away" IN backpacks upon arrival to campus and throughout the day, including during lunch.
  • Chromebook use during lunches is ONLY if a teacher has provided a pass to the Library for the purpose of completing work. The Librarian and/or the Library Clerk are able to monitor students' online activities via GoGuardian
  • If a student uses a smartwatch like a mobile phone (e.g. call, text, scroll), then we will address its use in the same way as a mobile phone. Using a smartwatch for time-only is appropriate and okay for the school day.

A few years ago, we explored the research on the developing teen brain and the use/over-use of mobile devices, based on the team's book study of "The Anxious Generation."
  • Our Assistant Principals provided training to high school and middle school staff on this topic last August 2025.
  • CKMS led the district as the first secondary school to be "mobile device free" from bell-to-bell.
  • Our behavior referral data reflected a decrease in the number of behavior incidents over time and we were able to present this information to our School Board.
  • By Semester 2 of last year, other secondary schools in our district were moving to the same policy.
  • You can learn more about this work by reviewing the Anxious Generation For Parents information sheet, which includes resources for parents.

We've learned the importance of teens practicing social/communication skills and problem-solving skills through play-activities during their lunch period.
  • Our AdminTeam is committed to scheduling P.E. teachers for Period 3 planning/prep (during lunches)
  • When P.E. classes are not on the field or in the gym during lunch times, our students have access to daily recess
